Blog 8: some opinions about some issues

Hi, today I'm gonna give my opinion on some controvertial issues

What is your opinion about "vertical ghettos"?

Well, I obviously had to answer this one, hadn’t I? First of all, I have to say the term “guetto” used on this particular situation is wrong; a guetto means much more than just people living crowded and hyperdensification, it has to follow a series of factors in order to be considered a guetto, for example it has to have a hierarchy inside the guetto aside from the regular order kept by the government.  (I recently had a test about this topic on Social Geography, sorry if I’m rambling). Going back to the topic, I think “vertical guettos” are an aberration for the life of the people whom lives in them. They just transgress unspoken rules of ethics, like enough space to live, a good water pressure, etc. And it’s just not the people who live on them that suffer but the people living nearby as well, they don’t get to have sunlight because of the towers. I get people need a place to live and some can only afford a “cheap” (by no means those department are cheap ones) place with the characteristics a “vertical guetto” has, but that doesn’t mean this people should live in the situations they live in, just because of the negligence of the Plan Regulador Comunal (non-existent when the towers where made or with poor regulation) and the ambition of the estate industry.

What is your opinion about obstetric violence?

A few months ago I got really into this. It’s a topic recently acknowledge by the ONU, but it has occurred ever since women bear children and it’s another expression of gender violence. Women are no longer seen as individuals with the ability to make their own choices regarding their bodies at the time of giving birth, as if birth were the same for all women. I think it’s an institutional violence, increased by the power modern medicine has over women, and the power a doctors’ word has over what a woman can feel and know about their own body.

What is your opinion about water scarcity?

Water scarcity it's a topic everyone should be worried about. It's alarming how lots of places, especially the poorest countries, have no water already. It's frustrating how the people with less resources have to suffer these consequences even when the countries and the people with more money are the ones drying up the planet. But I think we all have to make a mea culpa about water scarcity, we do not have the caution we must have in our daily consumption of water, we just sit in a privilege position and watch other people suffer water scarcity.
